If a charity has income in excess of £1 million on or after the accounting period ended 31 March 2015, the accounts need to be audited by a Registered Auditor. It is also essential that if a charities gross assets exceed £3.26m and their gross income exceeds £250,000, an audit is also required.
PCLG, Chartered Accountants are registered to carry out audit work in the UK by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Details about our audit registration can be viewed at www.auditregister.org.uk under reference number C002698249.
An audit not only gives credibility to your accounts, but provides a wealth of information which can help decide on future plans, funding requirements and decisions.
Smaller Charities which do not require an audit may need to have their accounts checked by an Independent Examiner.
An Independent Examination consists of:
A review of the accounting records kept by the Trustees of the charity;
Comparing the Accounts with the underlying records;
Consideration of any unusual items.
Although this doesn’t give the same level of assurance as an audit, this external scrutiny of the charity accounts does give the Trustees, public and other stakeholders a level of comfort that they have been independently checked.
